Artist: Portugal. The Man
CD: Evil Friends

“Big Sound,” That is my take away from listening to this great new album from indie darlings Portugal. The Man. Everything just feels lusher this time around. The melody’s are hookier, but not to poppy. This is one of the most fun albums of the year and it will have you humming to yourself all day long.
Their are many stand out tracks. To me, however, “Creep in a T Shirt” is the best of the bunch. The falsetto is perfect. The big band sound of the chorus is amazing (and among my favorite sounds of the entire album). I hope this song goes big, it will sound amazing next to anything going on right now in the indie rock scene. “Purple Yellow Red Blue” is another stand out track. Yeah, it might be a drugged out sing along, but man is it catchy. And who doesn’t like to sing along about recreational drug use? “Atomic Man” has all of the makings of a classic song; catchy melody, banging rhythm, and my favorite line on the album “…after you Hell should be easy”, who hasn’t felt that way about somebody. It’s these universal themes spread across the album that shows the maturity in song writing that Portugal. The Man has found. Album closer “Smile” winds down the album perfectly. Closing out what is one of the great musical journeys of 2013.
I was luke warm on early releases from PTM but after this album they can include me in a growing list of new fans. Lets hope these guys come thru West Michigan soon to show us what they can do live with this album.
