Five Summer Albums To Look Forward To
by John Verburg

2012 has already been a solid year for music. It has given me one my favorite albums of the past couple of years in the Cloud Nothing’s Attack on Memory. Crocodiles, The Walkmen, and Japandroids also just released excellent albums in their own right as well, but given that we aren’t even halfway through the year yet, there is sure to be more great music being released. Here are five albums that I am personally looking forward to this summer that are sure to make 2012 even better.

1. Fiona Apple- The Idler Wheel Is Wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More than Ropes Will Ever Do

Don’t you have to give Fiona some credit for the title of the album alone? Idler, which comes out June 19th is long anticipated fourth album from Apple, who has been dormant since her last album Extradorinary Machines was released in 2005. The sultry singer/songwriter has already seen a couple of her new tracks released out into the world, with ‘Every Single Night’ and ‘Werewolf’ making their rounds around the internet already, much to the delight of fans everywhere. I can’t say that I have always been a fan of everything Fiona has ever done, but one thing is for sure, she is definitely a provocative figure who has provided spectacular moments before.

2. Twin Shadow- Confess

Confess is the second album from Twin Shadow, the moniker for artist George Lewis Jr. After releasing the excellent debut album, Forget, to much critical success in 2010, I suspect that Lewis won’t fall victim to any sophomore jinx on his new album when it is released on July 10th. He has already put out the ambitious ‘Five Seconds’ for everyone to hear, and if that song is any indication, Confess promises to be an album to look forward to.

3. Fang Island- Major

Major is the second proper album to be released by the party-rock band Fang Island. It will see the shelves of record stores on July 24th. If you haven’t heard this band before, do yourself a favor and check out some of the video of their live shows on YouTube. I’ve already heard one song from Major called ‘Asunder’ and it didn’t disappoint. If you are a fan of Titus Andronicus, do yourself a favor and put Fang Island on your list of albums to get in 2012.

4. Bloc Party- Four

Kele and company are back with their fourth studio album, creatively titled Four, on August 21st. It is the first release from the band since 2008’s Intimacy album, which sounded like the rushed release and effort that it was. Since then, the band has been off doing different things, and many worried that Bloc Party was no more. This is going to be interesting just to see if the band can re-capture the mojo from their first album Silent Alarm, or continue down a path that leads to irrelevancy.

5. Yeasayer- Fragrant World

August 21st appears to be a good day for record releases, as Yeasayer sends it’s new effort, Fragrant World, out to people on the same day as Bloc Party. 2010’s Odd Blood was one of my favorite releases of that year, and I suspect that this new album will be no different. Yeasayer is one of those bands that push the envelope a little bit, yet still manage to make their songs accessible to the listener. Single, ‘Henrietta’, is already out there for people to check out, and you should probably do so.
